Caucus and Convention Guide

The Ward 9 DFL Precinct Caucuses will take place Tuesday, April 8th at South High School (3131 19th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55407). Doors open at 6pm, and proceedings will start promptly at 7pm, so make sure to get there a bit early! You do not need to pre-register to attend, but if you plan on going and want to help my campaign, please commit to caucus for Jason! This helps us know who will be coming so we can make sure you have everything you need.

I'm also asking my supporters who come to the caucuses to become delegates to the Ward 9 DFL endorsement convention on May 31st if you're able.

What is a DFL caucus?

The DFL Precinct Caucuses are a gathering of community members who identify as members of the Minnesota DFL party. If you attend, you’ll have the chance to talk with your neighbors about which candidates you’d like the DFL to endorse! Caucusing is a great way to meet both your neighbors and candidates running for office, including myself!

Caucus-goers will elect a smaller group to become delegates to the DFL endorsing conventions. These delegates have the opportunity to directly vote on who the DFL will endorse. This year, every elected office in the city is on the ballot, including City Council, Mayor, Park Board, and Board of Estimate & Taxation, and attending caucuses is one of the best ways to make your voice heard in these important elections.

Why caucus?

Caucuses are the first step in the DFL endorsement process. A large majority of Minneapolis residents identify as DFLers, and the DFL endorsement is incredibly important in local races. By going to caucus and becoming a delegate at convention, you can make a significant impact on who represents you in elected office.

What does caucusing look like?

Caucuses are a space to discuss candidates and issues with your neighbors. You’ll be grouped with your neighbors who live in your precinct, so you’ll really be with your neighbors — the people who live within just a few blocks of you! You’ll choose someone to facilitate (called a precinct chair or convener), then choose the people who will be attending the DFL endorsing conventions as a delegate. These are the people who will vote on who the DFL will endorse. The caucusing process usually takes about an hour.

If you can’t make it to the physical caucus, you also have the opportunity to fill out the caucus non-attendee form (due by 6:59pm Saturday, April 5th) to register your support for any candidates and/or run to be a delegate. In-person attendees will have priority to become delegates.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email me at info@jasonchavez.org, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can! I’ll have a convention guide up soon.
